Fear in Hereditary

Scary movies have many ways in portraying fear, Hereditary builds fear in audience by the very disturbing scenes it shows throughout the movie and the music behind it while happening. Many movies are scary, but this is one that has scenes stick in your head for a while. 

 From the scene we watched in class the music had a big part to play. As the brother was driving, the sister in the back couldn't sit still because something was wrong, and the music kept intensifying to a point it lets the audience know something is about to happen, so it gets their heart racing. When she sticks her head out the window and it gets taken off the music goes from being so loud to a sudden stop. It leaves the audience in shock because no one would have expected that to happen. That stop in the music leaves you on edge waiting for something else to happen right after that, but nothing does, the brother just drives home in silence. One might expect him to turn around and check on her or even go to the hospital. Since he does nothing and we are left in silence, it makes the scene very unsettling. 

Something special about this movie are the lengths of certain scenes. Later on, the brother goes home, and the mom finds the body of the daughter headless, this scene is followed by her screaming. They leave the scream there for a long time, making it very uncomfortable for the audience. Not only does this happen in the scene watched in class but also in other scenes throughout. 

Movie visuals are used to set the tone and atmosphere for any movie. In the scene we watched the lighting is very dark and the movie is set in the forest, which is where no one wants to be during a time you're being haunted, which can also create a big fear in people. Also, they put the very disturbing and raw image of the girls' head left on the side of the road at a very random time, one just gasps as it pops up.

Although Hereditary was a very disturbing movie I think it did a great job in putting fear and suspense into their audience to the point they still want to finish the movie to see what will happen next.
